^C^B Rook vs Knight Endings

^C ^B #INTRODUCTION
^C ^B ===================================================================
The purpose of this database is to aid in the study of those positions
which contain a lone Rook against a Knight. Usually the Knight can draw
these endgames - IF he keeps close to the King, and away from the corners.
Once the Knight is separated from his King, he is likely to be driven to
the edge of the board, trapped and captured; indeed, this is the goal of
the side with the Rook! It is interesting to note that even the stronger
chess-playing programs fail to realize that this should be the goal: They
often keep trying to checkmate the King after driving the Knight off; an
impossible task, since the "forgotten" Knight makes a life-saving tempo
move as the stronger side is about to deliver mate.
This database starts out with 19 theoretical, textbook positions; then,
there follows a collection of 19 real-life examples from tournament play.

^C ^B USING THIS DATABASE : NAVIGATION
^C ^B =================================================================
There are two basic ways to use this database: You can start with game #1
using the LIST GAMES option (CTRL-L) in the main program, and - by using
the F10 key - sequentially go through the database; Alternatively, you can
use THIS Hypertext NAVIGATION MENU. You can scroll through the diagrams and
select one of interest merely by highlighting the information under the
diagram using the arrow keys and hitting <enter>.
Once you are in the main program, if you wish to return to this Hypertext
navigation menu, just use the <home> key.
